Early Autumn at The Fernmount Food Forest

The days in May (our Autumn) are rapidly growing shorter but there is still plenty of activity in our food forest.

Sea Grape

Sea Grape Coccoloba uvifera

Apart from producing delicious fruit and plenty of it these trees have a spectacular appearance. They are very unusual having a plate-like waxy leaf that can reach up to 20cm in diameter. On a hot day the leaves make an ideal fan. They are very tough, require little maintenance and don't mind sandy soil and salt spray. They are mostly found growing along the seaside and enjoy the strong light reflected from the water.   Daleys Fruit Tree Nursery

Sea grapes are dioecious, with separate plants bearing male or female flowers.

Loquat

"The loquat (Eriobotrya japonica) is a species of flowering plant in the family Rosaceae, a native to the cooler hill regions of China to south-central China." Wikipedia  It has long been a popular fruit tree in Australia.

Unfortunately none of these Loquat flowers resulted in fruit.

Longevity Spinach—Gynura Procumbens—Perennial Protein Vegetable

Gynura perhaps gains its super-food status because of its ability to counteract diabetes and reduce elevated blood sugar.   Shown to be as effective as the front-line diabetic drug metformin (with none of the side effects), gynura also lowers blood pressure and LDL cholesterol.) Our Longevity Spinach thrives throughout the year in its permanent perennial bed.
